Visit the Ballarat Observatory this Spring and Learn about the extremes of space! Each Session is run by astronomers from the Ballaarat Astronomical Society who love to talk all things astronomy related. Bookings are required for each session*
EXTREME SPACE is running during the Spring School Holidays and World Space Week (20/9-10/10)
AstroKids (Saturdays 4.00-5.30pm)
AstroKids Sessions are aimed at families with children aged 5-10. With hands on experiences and a talk learn about the extremes of the universe – the hot and the cold, the big and the small and more!
Evenings (7.00pm-9.00pm various dates)
Evening Sessions include a tour of the observatory the AstroTour movie “Extreme Places”. History Tour, and viewing at the telescopes. In case of cloudy weather stargazing and telescope viewing will be replaced by a virtual sky tour. Alternatively, a raincheck can be arranged.
Dates:
Saturdays: 20/9, 27/9
Mondays: 29/9, 6/10
Thursdays: 25/9, 2/10, 9/10

A minimum number of participants is required for each session to proceed. If this number is not met, the Ballaarat Astronomical Society reserves the right to cancel the session. In such cases, participants will be contacted and offered a refund or the option to reschedule.
Accessibility Notes
Mobility
- All Sessions require mobility to climb stairs and step ladders without handrails
- Participants make need to walk across uneven ground to access certain activities
- There is a footpath connecting all main buildings.
- Assistance Dogs are Welcome
- A portable ramp is available for the lower half of the main hall and the shop.
Toilets
- A unisex ambulant toilet (LH) is available upon request. This is accessed via a timber ramp from the main footpath.
- Standard Male and Female outdoors toilets are available near the carpark.
- The Site does not contain adult and or child changing facilities.
- The closest “Changing Places” facilty is the North Gardens Adult Change Place, Wendouree Parade, Lake Wendouree. The facility is open from dawn to dusk 7 days a week, or can be opened 24/7 with MLAK key.
Travel
- The Closest Buses are the 23 (Mount Pleasant) and 21 (Buninyong) buses. Timetables can be accessed at https://cdcvictoria.com.au/travel-information/timetables-and-maps/ballarat/
Auditory/Visual/Sensory
- The movie Screening will be in 2D on a flat screen unless a session is specified otherwise.
- The movie screening does not contain captions or an audio description.
- The site is close to “Sovereign Hill” which lets off several gun salutes throughout the day the can be audibly heard from the observatory site.
- The Site is quite dark at night with minimal lighting.
- Colouring Sheets and pencils/markers are available in the main hall.
