The Ballarat Dark Sky Community is about protecting the night Sky for current and future generations to share.
Recognising that the Wadawurrung/ Wathaurong have lived on this land and their culture is integrally linked to the night sky and has been so for thousands of years.
The night sky means many things to many people but the one thing we all share is the great weight of eternity overhead in the dead of night, when time could stop still and you can cast yourself back in time to the early generations of indigenous peoples.
It is now our generation of diverse cultures which is now looking after the environment , to pass on again to future generations.
How can you help to reduce Light Pollution and protect our environment?
The Ballarat Observatory -BAS supports the
IAU Centre for the Protection of the Dark and Quiet Sky from Satellite Constellation Intereference.
The IAU embraces the principle of a dark and radio-quiet sky, not only as essential to advancing our understanding of the Universe of which we are a part, but also for the cultural heritage of all humanity and for the protection of nocturnal wildlife.

Smart technology Can Protect Your Business while Protecting the Night Sky
You can install technology to protect your business which is only turned on when an intruder approaches, keeping the area dark whilst no business is happening. We can turn off unnecessary lighting late at night.
